Summary Report of the Global Indigenous Peoples' Consultation on REDD

Summary Report of the Global Indigenous Peoples' Consultation on REDD held last November 12 - 14, 2008 in Baguio City, Philippines. The consultation was attended by 24 indigenous participants from Asia, Pacific, Latin America, Africa and North America, with 17 representatives of NGOs and UN agencies. This consultation was organized by Tebtebba,  UN University - Institute of Advanced Studies, Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN-REDD Programme.

Summary Report of the South East Asia Indigenous Peoples' Consultation on REDD

9 - 11 November 2008, Baguio City, Philippines

 

In the context of the increasing global focus on climate change, attention is being paid to the role of the forestry sector in contributing to and fighting against climate change. In particular, this includes a recent focus on opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries – known as ‘REDD’. Like most climate mitigation tools, REDD-related activities pose risks and opportunities for Indigenous Peoples (IPs).

ADB Releases 2nd Draft of its Safeguard Policy Statement

ADB logoThe Asian Development Bank has released the 2nd draft of its Safeguard Policy Statement. This is a result of its ongoing Safeguard Policy Update that aims to "pull together currently separate policies on involuntary resettlement, indigenous peoples, and the environment."

ADB will be holding consultations on its Statement with different stakeholders, including indigenous peoples, at its Manila headquarters on 18, 19, and 20 November.

The Statement is available for comment until 4 December 2008. Download the Policy Statement.

Recalling the message delivered to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues by the President of Bolivia, Evo Morales Ayma, on 21 April 2008; noting that the Forum warmly welcomed the presence of President Morales and recognized the achievements of his government in the recognition, promotion, protection and fulfillment of indigenous peoples’ human rights; considering that the mandate of President Morales and his constitutional government was democratically reaffirmed through the referendum celebrated in August 2008, the President of the Permanent Forum, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, expresses grave concern over the recent developments in Bolivia.
